How to select furnace lining and charge materials for medium-frequency furnaces?
Mar 12,2021
Medium-frequency furnace The furnace lining to be used should be selected based on the type of steel being smelted or the kind of nonferrous metal being processed. For example, certain steels are suitable only for melting in alkaline medium-frequency furnaces. When smelting high-manganese steel alloys in acidic medium-frequency furnaces, manganese oxide will combine with silica in the furnace lining to form low-melting-point silicates, thereby causing rapid deterioration of the furnace lining.

The melting process in a medium-frequency furnace is essentially a melting operation with little or no use of oxidation-based melting methods; typically, it lacks decarburization capabilities. Moreover, the slag temperature is low, resulting in poor sulfur and phosphorus removal efficiency. Therefore, medium-frequency furnaces have very strict requirements for charge materials. The sulfur and phosphorus content in the charge should be as low as possible—ideally at least 0.005% to 0.010% below the lower specification limit. It is essential to accurately determine the weights and chemical compositions of various ferroalloys in order to... Medium-frequency furnace During the smelting process, the composition of the steel is controlled through precise calculations. The charge materials should be pure, dry, and free of rust—especially for steels and alloys that are sensitive to gases, such as nickel-based alloys. Before use, both the charge materials and slag in medium-frequency furnaces must be thoroughly preheated and baked. It’s also important to note that scrap materials should not be mixed with non-ferrous metals, nor should they be combined with sealed containers or explosives, to prevent explosion hazards. Furthermore, the size of the charge loaded into the medium-frequency furnace should be appropriate for both charging and melting operations.
Medium-frequency furnace Before loading, the furnace should be cleared of any residual slag and its lining inspected for damage. Parts that are severely damaged and have turned black due to rapid cooling must be repaired. The particle size of the patching material should be smaller than that of the ramming material, and slightly more binder should be used. For large furnaces with severe damage, workers can be lowered into the furnace using an iron mold to perform filling and ramming repairs.
